My default bandaging is a Second Skin adhesive unless otherwise requested.
If using Second Skin, you can leave the bandage on for 3-5 days before removing. While having the second skin on, please refrain from popping/picking at any air/ink bubbles that may form under the bandage, as this contaminates the area. Ink bubbles are also very normal, so no need to worry if they do form.
When it is time to remove the second skin bandage, I recommend peeling it off slowly in the shower.
Once the bandage is removed, gently wash it with a non scented, gentle soap. I personally use and recommend the orange unscented Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo/soap.
After you have washed your tattoo, allow it to fully air dry, then apply an unscented lotion that does not contain petroleum. Lubriderm Daily Moisture is a popular choice. Organic/pure coconut oil is also a good option, as long as there are no other additives.
Continue to wash your tattoo 2-3 times a day, moisturizing after each wash, for 4 weeks.
During these 4 weeks, there should be absolutely no swimming and/or soaking your tattoo. This includes pools, lakes, oceans, hot tubs, baths, or other bodies of water. You can still shower like normal, but do still try to avoid overly soaking the fresh tattoo.
Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight for at least the first 3 weeks. After 3 weeks, you can use a light layer of sunscreen on your tattoo if you will be in the sun for a prolonged period of time. Do not use sunscreen on your tattoo before the 3 weeks are up. This can further irritate your tattoo while it is healing.
If you go to the gym, be extra cautious while your tattoo is healing. Be sure to clean all equipment before use and avoid any contact with the tattooed area. Don't forget to wash and moisturize your tattoo after each session.
If you notice any signs of infection, such as excessive swelling, burning, discharge, etc., please let your doctor know!
If you have any further questions regarding the aftercare of your tattoo, do not hesitate to reach out to me at either of the resources listed below.
